COAST-TO-COAST 18th AUGUST 2018

We are planning a Coast-to-Coast run for 18th August 2018. The route will be Morecombe to Scarborough

It's planned to leave from the Midland Hotel, Morecombe between 0800 and 1000 on Saturday. The Midland Hotel is the art-deco hotel recently renovated at huge cost.

The Hotels in Morecombe are:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_Hotel,_Morecambe

http://provincialhotels.com/hotels/the-clarendon-hotel/

Both hotels have car parks. Between them they should be able to cater for our requirements.

The hotels in Scarborough are:

http://mounthotel.com/

https://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/396/Scarborough-St-Nicholas-hotel?rooms%5B0%5D%5Badults%5D=1&rooms%5B0%5D%5Bchildren%5D=0&rooms%5B0%5D%5Bextras%5D%5B0%5D=

The NCP Multi-Storey car park is in North Street so we have to walk: North Street, St. Thomas Street, St Nicholas Cliff/Cliff Bridge Terrace (one is an extension of the other). We will get 50% discount. The booking form will ask if you want to use the car park as they will issue the correct number of discount vouchers nearer the time. The car park details are here: https://www.ncp.co.uk/find-a-car-park/car-parks/scarborough-balmoral/

The route has now been planned and tested. Another trial run will be done next summer before the event. It crosses two AONB and both the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

The route will be on A5 paper in binders and handed out at the start.

Final numbers will be set by May 2018 and a £10.00 non-returnable deposit will be required. This will be deducted from the lunchtime meal so, in effect, the trip will be free other than meals and hotels, if required. Late booking will be accepted but a hotel in Morecombe and/or Scarborough may be difficult to find.

As at 15th November we have 92 cars registered. The run was published in Safety Fast last week (1st November) so expect that to reach 90-100.

The start will have to be staggered between 0800 and 1000 to avoid long convoys and give the tea rooms and the pub a chance to serve everyone.

The Midland have a function room that holds 150. We are arranging for a diiner for the night before the run if sufficient people would want it.

They have agreed we can leave from their car park and will have breakfast, bacon sarnies and tea/coffee available on the morning. They will also set up a table outside, so we can hand out the routes, event plaques and other stuff to participants. However, the car park will be pretty full with guests but there’s a retail park car park opposite we can use. We’ll try and arrange for cars to arrive in time to have a tea/coffee etc and leave in their time slot. (this won’t be set in stone, but we will ask for co-operation)

We have organised the morning tea/coffee stop about an hour and a half from Morecambe. This is at a pub as we could not find a tea room/café that would accommodate us.

We have arranged for a pub to feed and water us (could be 200 people) and there will be a special four choice menu (one being vegetarian).

The afternoon tea stop and parking is arranged at a “surprise” venue.

The car park in front of the Midland Hotel is under video surveillance and is patrolled hourly during the night. The car park at Scarborough is like a fortress overnight!

As the majority of the cars will be MGB’s I have arranged with Carl at Moss Bradford to take some spares (top & bottom hoses, heater hose, plugs points and condenser, distributor cap, fan belt) and return the unused items after the trip. I will be the last car leaving and will have them in my car with some AF spanners. Anyone who breaks down can ring me and I’ll see if I can get you going. If you can think of anything else, I can add to the list please let me know.

Carl is donating 100 carrier bags to put all route directions, event plaque, cable ties for plaque and any other paperwork.

It’s all coming together and I’m sure this will be a great day out for everyone.

I have published some pictures I took at Morecombe on my blog. Logon on to www.frenchblat.com Select Daily Blog and then look at 3rd November. Finally, the budget rooms at the Midland have now all been booked so if you want to stay there better make your booking now. Georgie has left and Tanya is our contact now.

It is possible to get hotels rooms cheaper than this. I’ll leave it those who are happy to do this to book through one of the web sites like booking.com or expedia.co.uk, tripadvisor.co.uk etc. In Scarborough those that book other than these hotels should advise me so I can book space in the car park. In Morecombe, it looks like it may be parking in the road or we may get you in the Midland car park.
